The Chinese University of Hong Kong was established in 1963 by ordinance as a collegiate and comprehensive institution through the federation of three existing colleges — Chung Chi College, New Asia College, and United College. The university was conceived to bring together Chinese and Western educational traditions and officially inaugurated on 17 October 1963. It originally consisted of faculties in arts, science, and social science and has since grown into one of Hong Kong’s major research universities.
The main campus of CUHK is located in the northwest of Sha Tin and spans about 138.4 hectares of hillside overlooking Tolo Harbour, making it the largest and greenest university campus in Hong Kong. The campus integrates academic buildings, libraries, museums, sports facilities, residential colleges, and cultural spaces within a landscape of gardens and scenic paths, offering a setting conducive to both study and recreation.
CUHK is governed by its Council and Senate, with leadership including a Vice‑Chancellor and administrative officers responsible for academic policies, research strategy, and institutional development. The university’s collegiate structure gives substantial autonomy to its nine constituent colleges, each of which manages student affairs, pastoral care, and community activities while contributing to overall governance.
The Chinese University of Hong Kong offers a broad range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs across eight academic faculties covering arts and humanities, business and economics, engineering, science, social sciences, education, law, and medicine. CUHK operates in both English and Chinese and emphasizes interdisciplinary research, global collaboration, and rigorous academic standards.
Student life at CUHK reflects a diverse and international community with numerous clubs, societies, cultural events, and athletic opportunities. The college system fosters a close‑knit community experience, providing residential life, social engagement, and peer support. The campus’s natural environment and proximity to urban Hong Kong give students access to cultural, professional, and recreational experiences beyond academics.
